What You’ll Be Doing

You will be joining our Environment, Climate and Resilience (ECR) line of business, which provides a range of environmental management and environmental and social safeguards support to international development organizations.  This includes undertaking environmental and social impact assessments for projects at all scales, technical and administrative support to donor safeguards processes, undertaking field environmental and social monitoring, and related guidance development and training delivery. USAID is our largest client.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of this position will be to lead environmental compliance and management and other safeguarding technical support to USAID Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA). The Mid-Level Professional will provide the following types of technical and administrative expertise: 

  • Specialist review of safeguards compliance documentation for humanitarian assistance, post-conflict, and food-security and other development projects.
  • Review, develop, and/or revise guidance documents to inform environmental and social management processes for humanitarian assistance and/or post-conflict transition programming.
  • Develop and present memos to clients of high technical and production quality, based upon review of safeguards compliance documentation.
  • Provide exceptional quality technical support in response to client or supervisor direction in a timely, accurate, and professional manner.
  • Create or make substantial contributions to research, analysis, translation, copyedit, document production, and writing to support the completion of technical products and deliverables in the areas of safeguards compliance, environmental and social impact assessments, and/or related training workshops and materials development.
  • Support project management, coordination, and/or administration, including preparing draft technical scopes of work or budgets for activities and/or independent consultants.
  • Meet internal and client cost and activity tracking and reporting requirements.
  • Support screening and proposal development for new business opportunities in line with practice business development priorities and processes.
  • Professional facility in Arabic, French, Spanish, or Portuguese.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in one of the following: Environmental, Earth, or Climate Sciences; Natural Resources Management; Agriculture; Environmental or Development economics, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Public Health, Disaster Reduction and Response, Development studies with STEM coursework; or Social Sciences with a clear focus in international development, or a related discipline.
  • 4 Years’ relevant experience if Master’s degree, or 6 years’ relevant experience if Bachelor’s degree, of which at least a portion is field-based international development experience in an academic, professional, or volunteer capacity.
  • Demonstrated track-record of excellence coordinating, managing, and/or completing project responsibilities with a positive attitude, timely delivery, and high quality, all under limited supervision.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills and ability to synthesize complex issues or scenarios quickly and accurately for internal and client audiences.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to directly interface with and manage multiple clients and project interests with professionalism, diligence, and in a manner that positively represents the organization.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and work well under pressure, including demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize across multiple responsibilities.
  • Ability to coordinate activities with superiors, colleagues, and overseas field staff.
  • Strong team player with a sense of humor that is committed to collegiality and collaboration in the workplace, while able to excel working independently under limited technical supervision.
  • Professional proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word, and general proficiency in the broader MS Office suite (e.g., PowerPoint) and Google Suite of programs (e.g., Google Docs, Google Sheets).
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally to developing areas in rural and urban settings. (Up to 10% of time may be on travel.)

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous professional experience working with or for USAID and familiarity with technical delivery and contracting requirements for USAID/US Government contracts.
  • Experience in Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, or Southeast Asia.
  • Experience supporting humanitarian assistance, post-conflict transition, or food security programs in developing contexts.
  • Professional facility in Arabic, French, Spanish, or Portuguese.

Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States as a U.S Permanent Resident or U.S. Citizen.

The minimum starting salary for this position is $85,000. The actual salary may be higher and will be determined by several factors, including relevant work experience, education, skills, and market competitiveness.
